What is K-BAR?

K-BAR (2024) is a site-specific installation by the Berlin-based artist duo Elmgreen & Dragset. It is an intimate pavilion with a working bar and an original 1996 painting by Martin Kippenberger. Set in the middle of the park forest, it brings a piece of metropolitan nightlife into a remote landscape, and the light inside changes with the time of day.

On the other days of the month the bar stays closed, but the painting and the interior can still be seen through the glass door.

On opening nights, guests walk through the forest at dusk to the lit pavilion for a 45-minute session at the bar. The cocktails were developed by Elmgreen & Dragset with a local mixologist, including one called the Dry Martin.

Tickets and booking

There are two ways in. Online, you book a session through Ticket Tailor for THB 500 on top of a Full Site Admission ticket (THB 500 for adults, THB 250 for full-time students and over-65s). An adult pays THB 1,000 in total and can spend the afternoon walking the art forest before the session.

Walk-in, from 5:30 PM, K-BAR alone costs THB 600 and does not include the rest of the art forest. With only six seats per session, booking ahead is the safer option. Online bookings cannot be cancelled once confirmed.

How to get there from Bangkok

By shuttle. A round-trip shuttle leaves Bangkok Kunsthalle at 10:00 AM and leaves Khao Yai Art Forest for the return at 5:00 PM, Thursday to Sunday. It costs THB 500 per person, admission not included. Seats are limited and must be reserved in advance; book it here. Because the return leaves at 5:00 PM, the 4:00 PM session is the only K-BAR session that fits a shuttle day trip. It is a tight window, so check timings with the team at info@khaoyaiart.com when you book.

By car. Khao Yai Art Forest is in Pong Ta Long, Pak Chong, Nakhon Ratchasima, around three hours from Bangkok, with parking on site. Driving lets you book any session, including the later ones in the evening.

Staying the weekend. If you are already in Khao Yai, the walk-in option from 5:30 PM makes K-BAR an easy evening plan.

Make a day of it

On Saturdays Khao Yai Art Forest is open from 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM, with last admission at 5:30 PM. A walking route of about 2.5 kilometres, with some slopes and steep paths, leads to works including Richard Long's Madrid Circle and Fujiko Nakaya's Khao Yai Fog Forest. The fog runs for 10 minutes on Saturdays at 11:30 AM and 4:30 PM, so the afternoon fog overlaps with the 4:00 PM K-BAR session. Pets, outside food and drinks, and drones are not allowed, and footwear suited to a natural environment is recommended. Full details are on the Khao Yai Art Forest visit page.

Frequently asked questions

When is K-BAR open?

K-BAR opens once a month, on the second Saturday, from 4:00 PM to 10:00 PM. Visits run in 45-minute sessions and the last session starts at 9:00 PM.

How much does K-BAR cost?

Booked online, K-BAR costs THB 500 per person on top of a Full Site Admission ticket (THB 500 for adults, THB 250 for students and over-65s), so THB 1,000 in total for an adult. Walk-ins from 5:30 PM pay THB 600 per person for K-BAR only, without access to the rest of the art forest. Both include one complimentary drink.

Do I need to book K-BAR in advance?

Booking ahead is the safer option. Each session seats only six guests, so a whole evening has room for just a few dozen people.

Is there a shuttle from Bangkok to Khao Yai Art Forest?

Yes. A round-trip shuttle leaves Bangkok Kunsthalle at 10:00 AM and leaves Khao Yai Art Forest for the return at 5:00 PM, Thursday to Sunday. It costs THB 500 per person, admission not included, and seats are limited, so reserve in advance. Because the return leaves at 5:00 PM, the 4:00 PM session is the only K-BAR session that fits a shuttle day trip.
